My mom said something today to which I'd love to hear a UU response. She said:
One could replace religion entirely with psychology.

I don't see how community would be replaced.
It'd be a hell of a psychology.
I'd like to hear more of the conversation that led to that statement. I don't fully agree with it, but I think that psychology combined with a couple other things could definitely replace religion if people let themselves give up what they've believed in for centuries.
I think the only response I can come up with that's polite is:
Anyone that truly thinks that should have their head examined with my towel.
~Donald
The only way I can make sense of that statement is to rephrase it thus: Psychology can be used to explain (entirely?) the phenomenon known as "religion."
If this is what was meant in the context (and I'm only guessing), I still don't accept it--at least not as long as the word "entirely" is included.
And I'd like to point out that I'm a psych major, as it seems relevant.
Psychology is not a communal thing--religion is. Now since UU is not a creedal, I do see what she's getting at and sometimes I think we UUs favor the academic/psychological side of things, but I still think that misses the point.
